Modification: Shifter Seat Bushing Last Updated: Saturday, May 24, 2008

It is a known problem that the shifter seat bushing wears out, breaks and causes shifting to be affected is various ways. My shifting problem was when downshifting into 3rd it wouldn't fully engage and would pop back out. The bushing is available from Toyota dealers for around $10. Marlincrawler.com also sells a heavy duty one that is the same price. That is what I went with.
Installiation was fairly straight forward. To get to the shifter seat the boot needs to come off which is held down by a plate with 4 screws. Pull the boot up and out of the way and then the shifter can be lifted out of the seat. The carpet makes getting the plate out a little difficult, but it will come out.

When lifting the shifter out of the seat be careful not to knock the broken pieces of the bushing down into the transmission. To get all the little pieces out a pair of tweezers works best.
